NEW YORK (AP) – An attorney for Kristaps Porzingis acknowledged that a woman had accused the NBA star of rape but said the Dallas Mavericks' attacker was "unequivocally" accusing the charges.

Attorney Roland Riopelle said Saturday that the complaint against the player was part of an extortion attempt that the FBI was investigating.

Citing unidentified law enforcement officials, the New York Post and other news agencies reported earlier that a woman had reported to police Thursday and said that Porzingis had raped her in her Manhattan apartment last year while he was playing for the Knicks.

NYPD officials declined to comment.

Riopelle added that Porzingis had informed the federal security forces in December that the accuser had made "exorbitant demands".

The lawyer said the NBA had also been notified.

Porzingis, a 23-year-old Latvian, was traded to the Mavericks in January.
