LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – On Thursday, a select group of Kentucky State Police soldiers were honored at the agency’s ‘Sworn Awards Ceremony’ in 2020, as the pandemic has forced ceremonies over the past two years until this year.
“When they walk through the door they never know what they may be facing, but they always have in mind that they may not come home to their family, they may not come back. at all at home, ”said Sergeant Billy Gregory.
Known as the “Thin Gray Line”… Kentucky State Police soldiers put their lives on the line every day to protect the Commonwealth. And, on Thursday, 55 soldiers were awarded for it.
“They did things that stood out from the crowd and broke up because of the little extra they were willing to give and sacrifice to make sure they got the job done and to protect people.”
The 2020 ceremony was unique according to KSP Commissioner Col. Phillip Burnett, Jr. He says the ceremony honored younger soldiers than ever … and he was sure to give them lasting advice.
“For our young soldiers, don’t tarnish what you have gained by losing sight of who you are and what you stand for when you wear your uniform,” said Col. Burnett Jr.
Kentucky State Police Sgt. Billy Gregory says it’s heartening to see so many young soldiers honored … but law enforcement continues to struggle to recruit more.
“Not just KSP but those in the state and across the country are fighting for nominations and we are doing our best to recruit the best of the best and are interested in doing that and want to part ways by doing this and be the best of the best.
He says they are working to maintain the workforce and the strength that underlies it… On Thursday, the goal was to honor the sacrifices already made and to celebrate the dedication to the Commonwealth of KSP soldiers.
“I think it’s about bravery and courage and stepping into the unknown and having the faith that you’ve been trained well enough and that you can count on each other to get through this.”
