LA County is once again forcing residents and visitors to wear masks indoors in public places amid growing concerns about the COVID-19 Delta variant, regardless of an individuals’ vaccination status.

The requirement should apply to commercial establishments such as cinemas.

The new health order will come into effect on Saturday, June 17 at 11:59 p.m., County Medical Officer of Health Dr. Muntu Davis said on Thursday. Exceptions will apply, with full details to be included on a health worker order by June 16.

The news comes as LA County faces a resurgence in COVID cases, as the Delta variant gains momentum. A month after California reopened on June 15, the county is nearly 10 times the number of COVID cases it saw just before the reopening. LA County cinemas have lifted face covering rules in recent weeks for those who are vaccinated, while urging those who are not to wear a mask. Exhibitors did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but theaters will no doubt follow instructions from county officials.

On June 28, LA County advised residents to resume wearing masks in public places, but did not make it mandatory. “Until we have a better understanding of how and to whom the Delta variant spreads, everyone should focus on maximum protection with minimal disruption to the routine, as all businesses operate without other restrictions, such as remoteness. physical and capacity limits, “officials said in a statement at the time. .

According to the public health department, just over 69% of Angelenos over the age of 16 have received at least one dose of the vaccine. Just over 5 million people have been fully vaccinated in the county.
