LA County Public Health Reports 14,482 New Positive Cases of Covid-19, 166 New Deaths – Update – Deadline

UPDATE: After surpassing 900,000 positive cases of Covid-19, Los Angeles County continues to experience an increase. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed 14,482 new positive cases and 166 new deaths on Sunday.

The new data brings the number of Covid-19 cases in LA County to 920,177 and 12,250 deaths to date. 7,964 people are currently hospitalized for Covid-19 while 22% are in intensive care. Of the nearly 5,000,000 people tested, 17% of people tested positive.

PREVIOUS: Los Angeles County recorded nearly 100,000 new cases of Covid-19 in a week, bringing the region to a total of 906,171 cases.

Public health reported that the county had hit another dark threshold, just a week after Los Angeles surpassed 800,000 cases of the coronavirus. Authorities confirmed 16,982 new cases of Covid-19 and 221 related deaths on Saturday alone.

“The speed at which we are reaching grim milestones in deaths and COVID-19 cases is a [devastating] a reflection of the immense spread that is occurring across the county. And this accelerated spread reflects the many dangerous actions individuals have taken while on vacation, ”said Barbara Ferrer, director of public health.

In addition to counting 100,000 new cases last week, LA Public Health has also confirmed more than 1,000 new deaths from Covid-19 in the past four days alone. To date, 7,966 people are currently hospitalized with the virus. 22% of hospitalized patients are treated in an ICU.

Southern California also continues to have 0% critical care capacity.

Los Angeles is in the midst of its coronavirus outbreak as transmission rates and death toll show no signs of stopping. As the vacation wave continues to ravage the county, health officials warn it could only get worse.

“The current numbers can get even worse. We might even see a further increase, ”said Dr. Paul Simon, scientific director of public health in Los Angeles on Friday. “It is very worrying.”

As numbers are set to rise and authorities identify incidents of the new, more contagious strain across Southland, public health experts continue to urge Angelenos to follow Covid-19 protocols – hide, stay home and maintain social distance.

With just two months away from the anniversary of the lockdown orders, the United States has a total of 21,853,471 coronavirus cases. 367,652 people have died from the virus.
