The LA County Public Health Department allows clinics to throw unused vaccines in the trash rather than inoculating thousands of residents desperate to get vaccinated, and it has angered at least one county leader who has mission to reverse this madness. Politics.
LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn is reacting to a story TMZ erupted last week, where a clinic administering the vaccine to health workers ended the day with 150 unused vials of the COVID vaccine that were about to go bad … as a large number of people who signed up were not shows.
The clinic – the Men’s Health Foundation in Inglewood – reached out to people who were not on the priority list but desperately wanted the vaccine, and these people got the remaining doses. Incredibly, this flies in the face of County Department of Health guidelines, which state that ONLY those on the priority list should be vaccinated, EVEN IF VACCINES ARE DIFFERENTLY IN THE TRASH.
We worked on this story for 4 days, and went back and forth with the Department of Health, who never gave us an answer to our question – ISN’T IT BETTER TO VACCINE NON-PRIORITY RESIDENTS THAN TO THROW THE PRECIOUS VACCINES IN THE GARBAGE? We never got an official answer to this question, but sources who were on appeal with the health department tell us they have decided not to take punitive action against clinics that replicate what Men’s Health. Foundation did. But it is a terrible solution.
Here’s the problem … policy always says that low-priority people can’t get vaccinated now, so clinics are essentially being told that it’s always wrong to vaccinate low-priority residents, even though vaccines would be otherwise wasted. Worse yet, the county health department has NEVER EVEN PUBLICALLY STATED THAT IT WOULD NOT TAKE ACTION AGAINST THESE CLINICS, so the fear is that the vaccines will be thrown in the trash.
Supervisor Hahn is outraged and wants the Department of Health to accept the program and clarify this insane regulation … IMMEDIATELY.
The point is that the Department, headed by Barbara ferrer, has absolutely not been prepared for the vaccine deployment, and people in her department are furious. There was no real vaccination plan, despite the fact that everyone had known for months that vaccines were on the horizon.
To be real … it defies common sense to throw away those life-saving vaccines rather than creating a waiting list for EVERYBODY when there are unused vials that are no longer frozen and about to go. get spoiled.
It’s probably a problem across the country, and it needs to be dealt with now … like NOW.
