A proposed update to the Los Angeles County health ordinance will include new rules to fight the pandemic, including the requirement for proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test for outdoor mega-events of 10,000 people or more, the public health director said on Wednesday.
The new health decree, which is expected to be released later this week, will also require proof of vaccination for all customers and employees in the interior parts of bars, wineries, breweries, nightclubs and lounges. The order will require customers and employees to have at least one dose of vaccine by October 7 and receive their second by November 4.
The order will recommend, but not require, vaccine checks for employees and customers in interior parts of restaurants.
“This amended health worker order aligns with the continued need to reduce the risk of transmission and increase immunization coverage,” public health director Barbara Ferrer told the oversight board. “This is a reasonable path forward that will position us to better be able to break the cycle of surges.”
About 100 million workers fall under President Biden’s new vaccine mandate because they work for companies that employ more than 100 people. But this mandate goes much further than the federal government has gone before. Mitch Blacher of NBC10 spoke to a legal expert about the requirement.
She said county health officials “felt that targeted vaccination warrants are now a very important strategy to rapidly ramp up excess vaccination in our county and end the pandemic.”
The vaccination / testing requirement for mega outdoor events – including the Dodger, Ram, and Charger games – goes into effect on October 7.
Attendees of mega indoor events of 5,000 or more are already required to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test.
