LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Los Angeles County officials on Thursday issued a new order for health workers requiring masks indoors, regardless of immunization status.

The new order will go into effect on Saturday evening at 11:59 p.m.

Masked and unmasked people walk through Grand Central Market in Los Angeles, California on June 29, 2021.

Exceptions, officials say, will apply in the same way as masking requirements in place before June 15.

The move comes as more than 1,000 cases of COVID per day have been reported in the county over the past seven days.

Authorities on Thursday reported 1,537 more cases and three deaths.

The number of people hospitalized for COVID in LA County rose to 452 on Thursday, from 406 on Wednesday. Of those hospitalized, 96 are in intensive care units.

County health officer Dr Muntu Davis said the county was ‘not where we need to be’ in terms of vaccinations

According to Davis, as of June 11, 10,712,037 doses of the vaccine had been administered and 5,067,109 LA County residents had been fully immunized.

Davis said given the growing spread of the virus, “waiting to do something would be too late.”

Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Sacramento County public health official recommended that fully vaccinated people resume wearing a face mask indoors in environments where vaccination verification is not required.

Similar to LA County, officials said the increase in daily COVID-19 cases appears to be due, in part, to the Delta variant.
