Firefighters and police converged on a plane that traveled from Indianapolis and landed at La Guardia airport on Saturday afternoon after a “security incident”, according to a spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration .
The plane touched down shortly after 3 p.m. and all passengers exited unharmed, spokesman Steve Kulm said.
The flight, a Republic Airways aircraft operating as the American 4817, declared an emergency and landed “in response to passenger behavior towards the end of the flight,” Republic spokesman Jon Austin said.
“Upon exiting the active runway, the aircraft came to a stop on a taxiway and performed a pre-emptive emergency evacuation,” said Mr. Austin. “Our crew reacted to the situation in accordance with our procedures and with professionalism and concern for the safety of all on board. Law enforcement and first responders encountered the plane and the passenger involved in the incident was arrested. “
The flight had 76 passengers and four crew members, American Airlines said. No injuries were reported for passengers or crew, the airline said.
The person who was taken into custody was not identified, nor what behavior had attracted attention.
A video Tarmac take showed emergency responders surrounding a man who was prone as passengers stood nearby. In another video, evacuated passengers are invited to “take a step back” and leave space for responders and humans.
The US Department of Homeland Security and the FBI did not respond to emails or phone calls on Saturday afternoon.
The flight took off from Indianapolis International Airport around 1 p.m., according to data from FlightAware.
