The Dallas Cowboys‘The 2021 season is off to a bad start.
As if lose the NFL launch game wasn’t bad enough, the Cowboys got more bad news on Friday. Starting right-wing tackle La’el Collins faces a five-game suspension for violating league addiction policy.
Collins appealed the suspension but a referee ruled against him. It didn’t stop Collins’ agent to file another appeal, so we’ll see if anything changes on this front. (I’ll assume not.)
Assuming Collins’ suspension continues, he will NOT be available for the Cowboys Week 3 Monday night football game against the Philadelphia Eagles. And that’s a big deal, as noted our friend RJ Ochoa more than Blog boys:
To be frank, it’s devastating for the Cowboys. They played without Zack Martin on Thursday night (who tested positive for COVID-19 last weekend) and seemed on track to get him back next Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers. Operating without Collins for over a month is going to be a challenge.
How the Cowboys deal with Collins’ absence remains to be seen. Martin is obviously the team’s starting right guard, but with Connor McGovern handling the position well on Thursday night, the Cowboys may be considering sacking Martin on the right tackle for the next five weeks.
Collins isn’t the only key player who’s already set to miss this key NFC East battle. Starting wide receiver Michael Gallup suffered calf strain on Thursday night and is would have missed three to five weeks. The Cowboys still have Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb, so it’s not like they’re unarmed. However, they will not work 100%.
Plus, I can’t help but point out how bad the vibes were for the Cowboys at the start of this season. De Dak Prescott missed much of training camp with a shoulder injury (which could reappear on the road?), to Mike McCarthy who looks less than inspiring on HBO Hard knocks, to these latest injuries / deletions … is all of this really the precursor of a particular season? We’ll see.
The good news for the Cowboys is that they currently lead the league in moral victories. So they have that going for them.
