STATEN ISLAND, NY – Scientists are warning that the Lambda variant of the coronavirus (COVID-19) deserves close watch.
In June, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a ‘variant of interest’, meaning it could be more dangerous than the original strain of the coronavirus. It was originally discovered in August 2020, in Peru, the WHO reported.
Experts say the variant needs to be carefully considered due to its prevalence in several countries and its mutations.
Six cases of the variant were recently detected in the UK, Public Health England announced in late June. All related to trips abroad.
So far, scientists have said that the Lambda variant is not as bad as the Delta variant, which is already spreading in the United States.
Although the scientific community is increasingly concerned that the Lambda variant may be resistant to vaccines, according to a recent report.
Although some studies have also found that vaccines are still able to neutralize the virus.
