The 49ers climbed to the 3rd pick in this year’s draft with one specific player in mind. We won’t know who this player is until the pick is officially announced on April 29. Speculation will be rife until then.
While much of the talk about choosing San Francisco has revolved around Alabama quarterback Mac Jones and Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields, NFL draft analyst .com Lance Zierlein sees North Dakota State’s Trey Lance as the top pick for the 49ers and head coach Kyle Shanahan. .
Zierlein joined Morning Roast on 95.7 of the game in San Francisco and explained why Lance’s experience in the North Dakota state offense set him up to fit Shanahan’s plan.
“What the state of North Dakota is doing is it’s a read-through offense. They establish their own protections. They do a lot of things outside the zone, which is obviously similar, ”Zierlein said. “You have a kick-start action if you want to put that in there, you put the big man in motion with athletics. This is really, because he’s a full field drive and he’s not one of those midfield college quarterbacks, it really mixes up and works with more layered passing attacks than San Francisco loves to run. And sure enough, Kyle (Shanahan) worked a much faster game and he kind of tweaked his offense to assimilate more what NFL football is today, which is a copy of college.
It’s going to be an intriguing wrinkle in the way the 49ers work with their pick. Shanahan said at his press conference that their pick was more about the future than this year, and they look set to roll with Jimmy Garoppolo as a starter as their rookie takes a year to learn the system and level up in the game. This would give some credence to the idea that the recruit does not necessarily need this immediate familiarity with this system.
On the flip side, Garoppolo’s place in the 49ers roster isn’t guaranteed and if they get the right trade for him, it’s hard to imagine they wouldn’t be aiming to move him. That would leave the No. 3 pick as the presumed starter with only Josh Rosen and Josh Johnson also on the roster.
A player who has previously thrived in an attack like Shanahan’s would apparently be able to hit the ground faster than a player who needs to get comfortable in the scheme.
Maybe the 49ers are looking for something different in their No.3 pick, but Lance’s NDSU background seems to make him a good fit with San Francisco. If Shanahan is also in love with the physical tools Lance brings, it’s easy to see why they would trade three first-round picks to climb the board and draft it out.
