LANETT – In a business meeting Thursday night, Lanett city council members appeared ready to decide on Monday who Kyle McCoy’s permanent successor is. Jamie Heard served as acting mayor, but someone needs to be appointed to fill the remainder of the term, which runs until October 2024. McCoy was recently removed from his post by the office of the attorney general after pleading guilty to two ethics charges.
“I am ready to present a motion that one of us be mayor,” said Council member Tifton Dobbs.
“We will vote on the mayor on Monday,” said council member Tony Malone.
City attorney Stanley Gray said council members can vote for someone who is currently on the council or for someone who is not currently on the council.
“I think we should vote on Monday,” Council member Angelia Thomas said. “Are you all okay with that?” “
No one said they weren’t.
Heard said having a good team, whether in sport or in government, is about everyone working towards a common goal.
“I think we can do it,” he said.
“I will support everyone who sits on this seat,” Thomas said. “We are committed to continuing to do great work for the community. We will stand united and stand united for the citizens of Lanett. Let’s keep our heads up. This city is not going to implode. Thanks, Jamie, for what you’ve done so far.
“The bottom line is that we keep working together to keep moving this city forward,” said Tony Malone, board member.
The next regular council meeting will be at 6 p.m. EDT on Monday, October 4.
