WILMINGTON – The local Wilmington City Schools School Board (WCS) voted Monday night to require all staff and students to wear masks from Kindergarten to Grade 12 for the first grading period.

The requirement will go into effect on Wednesday, August 25. Exceptions include outdoor recreation and lunch. The school district plans to contact families on Tuesday with the related information.

After the first four days of school, more than 84 WCS students had to be quarantined, WCS Superintendent Mindy McCarty-Stewart reported.

During the first week of school last week, which lasted just three days, there were more WCS students who tested positive for COVID than there were in the course of of a given week throughout the last school year, the superintendent said.

She also noted that among Ohio’s 88 counties, Clinton County has the second highest per capita COVID incidence rate.

“We know that wearing a mask is a way to help protect the health and well-being of our students and staff, and to keep students in school and participate in activities,” said McCarty-Stewart.

The school board voted 4-0 in favor of the mask mandate, with one member absent.
