A few hours after Jim Boylen, the coach of the Chicago Bulls, was sent off for arguing with Doc Rivers, the Clippers 'coach on Friday night, Zach LaVine contacted the Bulls' office and offered him to pay Boylen's fine, ESPN sources told the league. The Bulls have not yet decided they would accept LaVine's offer, sources said.
The relationship between Boylen and LaVine has had a difficult start.
When Boylen took over as head coach of the Bulls in December, LaVine was publicly skeptical of some of his training decisions. Boylen, known as an old-school disciplinarian who valued the defense, challenged LaVine's defensive efforts.
A few weeks later, their relationship was still tense. LaVine played an important role in the December meeting between the front office, the coaching staff and the players. The match was the result of discussions between several players on the boycott of a practice session after the team's 56-point loss against the Boston Celtics.
As the two continued to work together and spend time together, the jelly disappeared.
Boylen and Rivers were both ejected in the third quarter of the Clippers' 128-121 win over Chicago on Friday night. Boylen said that after the match, he challenged the way the Clippers were setting up the screens, noting that point guard Ryan Arcidiacono had to leave the ball after being hit hard in the first half.
Boylen, who has already had four technical fouls in the lead-up to Friday's game, will be fined $ 5,000 for the two technical fouls he has had. He will also receive an additional fine of $ 2,000 for ejection.
"What Jim did, personally, I respect a lot," LaVine told reporters after the match. "He really cares about us and he's going to fight for us, showing his true character of what he feels for us."
