Just months after being expelled from the Planned Parenthood presidency, Leana Wen accuses the abortion giant of hypocrisy and intimidation attempt.
Wen was fired in July after leading Planned Parenthood for less than a year. In a 1400-word bomb letter to Planned Parenthood's board of directors, Wen accused executives of suspending his severance pay and "ransom" from a confidentiality agreement.
"No amount of money will ever buy my integrity and commitment to the patients I serve," writes Dr. Wen in his letter, obtained by the New York Times.
Planned Parenthood claimed that Wen's departure was the result of disagreements over his management style, but Wen has long argued that a "vocal minority", many of whom sit on the board of directors, "prefers a philosophy resolutely political, abortion first, "and did not like Wen's decision to put instead a focus on women's health care.
Putting abortion on the back burner "is the best way to protect it," said Wen. The board of directors objected to her and dismissed her, which resulted in a lengthy and disputed negotiation exposing Planned Parenthood for what it is: a manipulative organization whose main activity is abortion and defense of abortion, which claims only to be a champion of women's health.
"It's profoundly hypocritical [that Planned Parenthood] would try to impose a gag order on his outgoing president / CEO while fighting the Trump administration's gag rule on Title X providers, "writes Wen. She referred to the recent release of Planned Parenthood from the Title X family planning program, which provides federal funding for family planning only to organizations that do not practice or direct abortions.
Wen is right. If the goal is actually health-related, then imposing a radical and pro-choice aggression agenda on Americans is not a winning strategy. Already, more than 61% of Americans are in favor of restrictions on abortion, and an even larger majority wants the ban on third trimester abortions. And 48% of voters support a law aimed at holding taxpayer funds in family planning as long as it continues to provide abortions.
Culture is changing, as is the political infrastructure. The Trump administration has already removed one of Planned Parenthood's taxpayer-funded crutches by giving it an ultimatum: stop serving abortions or quit title X. Planned Parenthood has chosen to leave the program, demonstrating what its real goals.
Planned Parenthood claimed that the government's ultimatum was a deliberate attack on women's rights. But Planned Parenthood does not care about women's rights and certainly does not care about women. After all, this is the same organization that denies the health and salary benefits of its former president, who miscarried just before she left, and now waiting for a child.
Wen knew that Planned Parenthood was in trouble. She tried to rehabilitate her image and make health her priority. But health care has never been Planned Parenthood's priority. It's just a tool that Planned Parenthood uses to get what it wants, whether it's federal funding or Wen's silence. But Trump's administration will not give in, and neither will Wen.
