In Sidon, a project of underwater "tourist gardens" was carried out, where old Lebanese military vehicles were dumped on the seabed. On Saturday, the inhabitants of the city woke up to the landing of the tanks of the army in the sea … in an operation which is neither safe nor military, but aiming to create the first "water park" with tourist and environmental benefits, the organizers said.

Large cranes placed ten old military vehicles, including tanks and tankers, deep in the sea off the coast of Sidon.

The vehicles consist of six tanks and four Soviet armored vehicles that the army fought during the 15-year-old Lebanese civil war that ended in 1990.

The representative of Friends of Zeira and Sidon Beach Kamel Kasber told the Agence France-Presse that the purpose of the project is to provide a "sanctuary for divers and a plant for the reproduction of coral reefs" . "We are focusing our work on the development and protection of the marine environment," he said. He added that the towers of the tanks "were directed towards the south of occupied Palestine (…) as a sign of solidarity with the Palestinian people".

This operation was carried out by the Civil Defense and a team of professional divers under the supervision of the army, after being delayed for several days, because of the height and the waves. The water park will be open to divers, diving enthusiasts and marine tourism enthusiasts, the organizers said.

The tanks, APCs and military vehicles used were abandoned by the army: they were thrown into three places far from the watercourse and set on the seabed to the north East of Zira, a small island It was exposed to the Phoenician city of Sidon in 147 BC.

Al-Zayra cleans its waters and has become the destination of Saida residents for swimming, diving and snorkeling away from the pollution of the beach. The gardens will have great benefits because the area is poor in fish due to the narrowness of the Sidon Sea.

The organizers are eager to attract a multitude of diving professionals and enthusiasts from around the world to enjoy the underwater landscape
