The figures do not take into account asymptomatic cases in vaccinees or those who have not been tested. The CDC only tracks cases of hospitalization or death.

NBC notes that the total number of groundbreaking cases is likely higher since nine states had no information while 11 states, such as Florida, did not provide death and hospitalization totals.

Leaked presentation slides from the CDC showed unpublished research indicating that the Delta variant causes more serious illness in unvaccinated people and spreads as easily as chickenpox.
