LETTER: Golden Parachute | Daily news from the peninsula

[ad_1]

Sequim’s newly hired city manager Matthew Huish was awarded an incredibly generous contract – along with an expensive golden parachute – by the usual majority in a city council vote (Armacost, Kincaid, Larkin and Pence).

Every member of this slim majority has been appointed to the board or ran unopposed, but they feel free to spend the taxpayer’s money with total abandon.

Mr. Huish’s contract will give him a massive salary of $ 180,000 per year, $ 17,000 in moving expenses and 12 months of severance and benefits.

Stellar Sequim City manager Charlie Bush, who was forced to resign without explanation by the same four board members, received some $ 40,000 less in salary and six months of severance pay. Note that Port Angeles, with a much larger population, pays its general manager $ 156,000.

Such generosity must mean that Mr. Huish is a very experienced and highly regarded professional in his field, right? In fact, Mr. Huish is the least qualified of the candidates interviewed for the position. He has only three years and more of experience in municipal administration. Mr. Bush had more than 20, and all of the other candidates interviewed had more than Mr. Huish.

Even though he was technically cleared of sexual harassment charges in Sandy, Utah, Mr. Huish has been described by some city workers as abrasive, unprofessional, condescending and difficult to work with (https://tinyurl.com/k4h6udjh).

Why did Mayor Armacost’s loyalists rush such a dubious candidate to this important post? And why pay a lot more taxpayers’ money for a lot less skills? Vote them in November.
