Powerful voices

Many thanks to Michael Ortiz and Olga Munoz Rodriquez for their powerful voices and beautifully written letters in the September 26th issue of Uvalde Leader News.

I would also like to address the ongoing controversy over the Jefferson Davis Highway Memorial marker at the Uvalde County Courthouse. It pays homage to Jefferson Davis, a white slaveholder. Is there an Adolph Hitler Memorial highway in Germany?

The Jefferson Davis Highway Memorial marker is an injustice: even non-residents of Uvalde County can speak out against injustice and sign petitions. This is the real American way.

I suspect the Jefferson Davis Highway Memorial marker will be the last Confederate tribute to be legally removed; but it will be. We are not going back.

Concerned! For the first time in over 80 years of existence, I am truly concerned for the country we live in – the United States.

Our leaders worry me when they talk about the use of horses by the border patrol in the illegal camp under the Del Rio Bridge. I was there on the day of the incident. I visited some of the border patrol horsemen – these officers entrusted the responsibility of protecting us and trying to prevent these criminals from entering the United States. They do not have the opportunity to deal with these criminals in a soft and calm voice, telling them “please go home and come back when you are allowed to do so”. These officers do not have time to put on a real pair of soft gloves before coming into physical contact with these criminals.

We don’t hear comments regarding the use of horses by law enforcement in places like New York or New Orleans for the purpose of crowd control. I don’t know if the officer has or hasn’t swung his reins on the criminal, but I can assure you that I would not let these criminals come near me or my horse! If they were to be away from me or my horse, I would use the level of force necessary to avoid hurting myself or my horse.

I’m worried. I worry when I hear our top officials in our nation, you know who they are, call these actions savage and brutal. I get worried when I hear our so-called president, referring to the horsemen, “these people are going to pay !!” What does he mean? I worry about our leadership and the future of our nation.
