ALLENWOOD – The number of inmates at Allenwood Medium Security Prison who tested positive for the coronavirus nearly doubled in three days.

The US Bureau of Prisons reported on Friday that 92 inmates had tested positive compared to 49 on Tuesday. The prison has 1,084 inmates.

The number of employees infected with the virus has increased from three to seven over the same period.

This is the second time the medium security prison has seen a peak in coronavirus cases. The first was in early October.

Meanwhile, statistics for neighboring Allenwood Penitentiary have not changed since Tuesday, with 126 inmates listed as positive. Seven staff members have tested positive, an increase since Tuesday.

About a fifth of the 573 inmates at this prison are listed as currently carrying the virus.

The Bureau of Prisons coronavirus resource page shows no cases of an inmate active in the low-security Allenwood Complex prison or the nearby Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary.

The State Department of Health reports that Union County, where the four prisons are located, has recorded 1,620 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and 16 deaths since the start of the pandemic. No inmate died.

The number of cases in that county increased by 162 last week.
