Lexington breaks daily record of COVID-19 cases over weekend

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Lexington broke its record for daily COVID-19 cases over the weekend.

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department reported 362 new cases of COVID-19 in its report for Sunday and 274 for Saturday for a total of 636. This is the first and second highest increase in one day .

No new deaths were also reported.

The new cases bring the total number of cases in Lexington since the start of the pandemic to exactly 15,636. The death toll stands at 112.

Lexington’s 10 biggest single-day case increases are now all in November. The city’s highest daytime totals to date are:

  • 362 cases, November 22
  • 274 cases. 21 November
  • 265 cases, November 14
  • 255 cases, November 11
  • 245 cases, November 16
  • 237 cases, November 21
  • 236 cases, November 7
  • 212 cases, November 19
  • 196 case, November 17
  • 195 cases, November 15

The state’s COVID-19 map still shows Fayette County in the red zone with 72.0 cases per 100,000 population. Red zone counties are those with 25 or more average daily cases per 100,000 population.

The health department said the current peak closely matches the Halloween weekend exhibits.

Last Wednesday, Governor Beshear announced several other restrictions to help stop the spread of the virus in the Commonwealth. These include:

  • Limit private meetings to your household and one other, up to eight people.
  • Limit site attendance for events such as weddings and funerals.
  • Closure of restaurants and bars for indoor catering with delivery, take-out and outdoor service only.
  • One-third capacity limit for gyms, swimming pools and fitness centers. This does not include any indoor practice for sports teams.
  • Professional services and commercial offices should allow employees to work from home.
  • And stop in-person learning in public and private schools.

Health officials say you can also help slow the spread of COVID-19 by following these public health guidelines:

  • Wash your hands often
  • Avoid close contact with others
  • Wear a cloth covering the face in public
  • Stay home if you have symptoms.

There are still several free test sites in the city of Lexington. The health department wants people to know if they can’t leave their home, but they need a COVID test, they can call the health department to get a test brought to them.

The total number of cases in the state is 158,100. The death toll is 1,787 and the state’s positivity rate is 9.19%.
