Heavy rains and lightning struck coastal areas of Los Angeles and Orange counties on Monday afternoon, Oct. 4, causing some beaches to close, meteorologists and officials said.

Lightning in the Los Angeles County area was seen in the late afternoon and early evening, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. Residents were urged to stay indoors during the storm.

All beaches at Long Beach and San Pedro in Malibu have been temporarily closed due to the storm, firefighters said.

By 5:45 p.m., the first wave of thunderstorms had passed through coastal counties of Orange and Los Angeles, said Joe Sirard, a meteorologist in the Los Angeles office of the National Weather Service. Although another round of coastal thunderstorms is expected later in the evening around 8 p.m., which could potentially last until the early morning hours of Tuesday, October 5, Sirard said.

“By sunrise things should be out by tomorrow morning,” Sirard said. “Tuesday should be a lot quieter.”

An alert has been issued for boaters from the Long Beach area to Catalina Island, urging them to take shelter during the storm, Sirard said.

Cloud-to-cloud flashes were seen around coastal Orange County, said Samantha Connolly, a meteorologist at the NWS office in San Diego.

The Los Angeles Chargers’ game against the Las Vegas Raiders in Inglewood was also delayed due to lightning.
