Did you know that nitrate is one of the most common chemicals in Wisconsin groundwater? High levels of nitrate in
drinking water can affect those who drink the water. The Lincoln County Health Department is proud to announce
the opening of their certified nitrate laboratory. This will be in addition to the already certified bacteriological testing laboratory. The
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) certifies the lab to test public and private wells.
“We know that clean, safe drinking water is essential for a healthy lifestyle. We are delighted to offer this service to
Lincoln County to help residents better understand their drinking water, ”says Meghan Williams, Registered
Environmental Health Specialist, Lincoln County Department of Health.
In addition to an annual test, the WDNR recommends testing for nitrates and bacteria before a woman who is or may
becoming pregnant will use the well, if you notice any change in the taste, color or smell of your water, or if so
changes have been made.
Test kits are available for purchase from the Lincoln County Health Department at 607 N. Sales Street Suite 101,
Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Samples can be returned to the laboratory Monday through Wednesday 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. Bacteria test kits are $ 20 and nitrate test kits are $ 25. Each kit includes a sterile water collection bottle,
instructions on how to take an appropriate sample, laboratory test results. Results will be available 2-3 days after samples
are returned to the laboratory.
