Listerine has debunked a new study that suggests mouthwash can kill coronavirus in 30 seconds.

The results of the Cardiff University study, which has not yet been peer reviewed or published in a medical journal, claim that mouthwashes containing at least 0.07% cetypryidinium chloride (CPC ) show promising virus-fighting capabilities. The scientists leading the study mimicked the conditions of a person’s nasal and oral passages and used brands such as Listerine and Dentyl.

However, Johnson & Johnson, manufacturer and distributor of Listerine, said the mouthwash is not linked to the coronavirus and should not be used as a treatment.
The company’s Consumer Health division noted that Listerine is “an antimicrobial mouthwash that is clinically proven to kill the germs that cause dental plaque, bad breath and early gum disease, gingivitis,” and in one statement to FOX Business, said the mouthwash “is not intended to prevent or treat COVID-19 and should only be used according to the directions on the product label.”
On its product website, the company posted “Guidelines for the Use of Listerine and the COVID-19 Outbreak” and its first line of information reads: “We encourage consumers to know and to follow the advice provided by the World Health Organization ”.
Listerine mouthwash sales have increased during the pandemic, according to Johnson & Johnson’s third quarter earnings report.

Preliminary results from the university study reveal that mouthwash can help fight off the virus in saliva, but there is no evidence for how it can affect the airways or lungs, which are the main areas of infection with COVID-19. A clinical trial will take place at University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff to examine how effective the brand of common mouthwash is in reducing levels of coronavirus in saliva, according to the BBC.
One of the specialist periodontists, Dr Nick Claydon, told the BBC that he thought the research was “very valuable”.
“If these positive results are reflected in the Cardiff University clinical trial, CPC-based mouthwashes… could become an important addition to people’s routines, along with hand washing, physical distancing and wearing masks, both now and in the future, ”Dr Claydon told the BBC.
The next clinical trials expected early next year will investigate whether mouthwash can reproduce the same results found in the lab on patients.
Johnson & Johnson has discredited the claims made in the study.
“To date, the data and available research are not sufficient to support the conclusion that the use of Listerine mouthwash may be useful in the prevention or treatment of coronavirus, as more research is needed,” said said the spokesperson at FOX Business, “As a company firmly rooted in science, we will actively participate in the scientific exchange on this topic. “
