Redknapp lashes out at Thiago’s critics

Jamie Redknapp called last season’s criticisms of Thiago ‘absolute rubbish’, saying the Liverpool midfielder proved people wrong against Leeds yesterday afternoon.

The Spaniard put on a great display as Jurgen Klopp’s side clinched a 3-0 victory at Elland Road, in what was his first Premier League start to the season.

Thiago prepared Sadio Mane to score the Reds’ third goal of the day and was effective in breaking play and setting the tempo.

The former Bayern Munich player received a lot of negative comments for his performances last season and Redknapp has come up to Thiago’s defense after his last performance at Liverpool.

“I listened to a lot of people talk about Thiago. When Liverpool have a bad race people go ‘he slows down the game and can’t handle the intensity’. Absolute waste,” he told Sky Sports.

“This guy is one of the best technicians you will see in world football, no matter what kind of pressure you put on him he never panicked.

“He’s relaxed on the ball. There were a lot of times (Sunday) he was in a good position to help the defense.

“He’s amazing to watch and it pissed me off last year listening to people who don’t understand the role of the midfielder. How to keep the ball, what to do, how to be in the right position. How to show. quality, how to give people opportunities.

“It’s because people are always looking for a scapegoat. Someone to say it’s their fault. He’s brilliant and that’s why Jurgen Klopp played him today.”
