FIFA statement after confusion over player availability
FIFA has issued a statement to clarify the current dispute between clubs and countries, regarding the availability of players after international matches.
Brazilian Liverpool stars Alisson Becker and Fabinho will be able to play a part in Sunday’s meeting with Leeds United at Elland Road, despite initial fears of missing out.
They had previously been banned by FIFA after the Brazilian FA was one of several associations asking FIFA to invoke its five-day rule, which meant players were not available for matches. Premier League this weekend.
The demands came after Premier League clubs refused to release players for international matches taking place in Red List countries due to quarantine requirements upon their return.
After lengthy discussions with the governing body, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Paraguay have all agreed to waive the automatic five-day rule.
Commenting on the matter, a FIFA statement said:
“Based on positive signals and constructive dialogue, FIFA received from the UK government towards the international match window in October, acknowledging that the players have no control over the dire situation caused by the COVID pandemic- 19 and the health restrictions currently imposed and, as a sign of good faith, goodwill and cooperation, the member associations of Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Paraguay, in close consultation with FIFA, have taken the decision to withdraw their complaints about England-based players and players scheduled to play in England, who have not been released for recent international matches. “
