Long Cane Middle School’s Greenpower USA Racing teams competed in their first meeting of the season last weekend. Team 999, made up of eighth grade students, achieved the highest presentation score and achieved the highest overall score for all grades and divisions. The meet lasted 12 hours on Saturday, with each team making a presentation and participating in the 90-minute race.
Austin Ellison, Team 999 Pit Team Leader, said last weekend: “It was pretty exciting. We had a few hiccups, but overall came back and did better. The team struggled to repair an incident with driver gloves and a battery clip in race two. Ellison said: “We would all come back together and work as a team to correct mistakes and get back on track as quickly as possible.”
“We will try to get the national first place again like we did the last two years, like we did last year. Nathan Shelton, a Team 999 driver, responded when asked what the team’s goal for this season is.
Throughout the competition, Matthew Graham led the teams as a coach and teacher of GreenpowerUSA. This did not go unnoticed by the students. “Sir. Graham he made sure we all felt like we knew what we were doing and he just made us feel like we had a job and he really helped us learn what to do and what to do. ‘Rest assured that we are fine and ready, “said Gracie Brown, data manager for Team 999.
The program continues to provide Troup County students with the opportunity to gain hands-on STEM experience and have fun with it. The next meeting of the GreenpowerUSA teams will be on December 4 in Columbus, Georgia.
