It’s no secret that 2020 has been devastating for many businesses. In Los Angeles, the distribution of federal relief loans was both extremely limited and extremely uneven. Attempts by the city to provide relief weren’t much better.
Many companies have been forced to fend for themselves. Speaking with local entrepreneurs, my colleague Emily Guerin found that those who were able to rotate their operations or their offer of a new product were more likely to stay afloat; those who couldn’t or didn’t know were more likely to close.
For example, like many other local restaurants, the owners of Wanderlust Creamery in Santa Monica quickly turned to online ordering, shipping pints of ice cream nationwide. Other open restaurants ghost kitchens. In fact, innovation linked to the pandemic sure and sure and sure.
Yet most hope to return to their usual business practices soon – like everything else these days, it’s just a matter of when.
