Look at the sky tonight for a glimpse of the Perseid meteor shower

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Perseid meteor shower will light up the skies from Wednesday evening through Thursday morning.

The action in the sky can likely be seen between 9 p.m. and midnight on Wednesday, and will be most visible in the northern hemisphere around the world. (Obviously, you’ll need to step away from the city lights for better viewing.)

An expert from the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope explains the celestial event which is sure to excite astronomers.

“When the asteroid enters Earth’s atmosphere, we now call it a meteor and that’s what we see with a meteor shower. Space rock running through the air. It glows because of the heat of the atmosphere and the speed at which it moves, causing a shooting star, once that space rock crashes into the earth’s surface, we call it a meteorite, ”said Mary Beth Laychak of the Canada-France Telescope -Hawaii.

The peak of the meteor shower is expected between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Thursday.
