Los Angeles has become the first county in the country to record more than one million cases of the coronavirus, health officials have said.
More than 14,669 new cases were reported on Saturday, bringing the total to 1,003,923, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said.
The grim milestone comes as there are currently 7,597 people hospitalized with the virus and there have been at least 13,741 deaths.
“Our community is taking the brunt of the winter push, facing a large number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths, five times more than we have experienced over the summer,” Barbara Ferrer, director of the county public health department.
Health officials also confirmed on Saturday its first case of the new strain of coronavirus first detected in the UK.
The patient is a man who recently spent time in the county and has now traveled to Oregon, where he is isolating himself.
“This more contagious variant makes it easier for infections to spread in the workplace, in stores and in our homes,” Ferrer said. “We are in the midst of a public health emergency, so do all you can to protect yourself and those you love.”
