Los Angeles Rams nod to Super Bowl history with ‘modern throwback’

The Los Angeles Rams will have another uniform look for the 2021 season, but it will be more familiar to longtime fans of the team.

The Rams revealed on Tuesday what they call the “modern throwback” which features elements of team uniforms worn from the mid-1970s to 2000s, including in Super Bowl XIV and Super Bowl XXXIV. The uniform will feature a white jersey with solid blue numbers, blue ram horns on the shoulders and yellow hooded sleeves. These will be complemented by the Rams logo on the neck and the team wordmark on the left side of the front of the jersey.

Due to the NFL one-time helmet rule, which was repealed this offseason but won’t come into effect until 2022, the Rams will continue to use the helmet design that debuted last season.

In May 2020, the Rams introduced their new brand of uniform which featured new colors they called “Rams Royal”, “Sol” and “Bone”, a new logo and a new helmet with a blue mask. The redesign was tied to the opening of SoFi Stadium last year.

“Our goal has always been that it will be an incredible, iconic, modern building. You want the uniforms to match the style and design of the building,” said Kevin Demoff, chief operating officer of the Rams last year. “But there is still the tradition and some elements that our fans have come to know and love. I think it’s a balancing act for any team to go through that as you go along.”

This design was met with some disdain on the part of former running back and Hall of Fame Eric Dickerson.

“I just don’t like the stripe around the sleeve. It’s not big enough. It almost looks like a lightning bolt, like the Chargers uniform,” Dickerson said in a radio interview with the last spring. “I don’t like the stripe on the bottom of the pants. I wish it was bigger. And the horn, man, it’s horrible. I mean, it’s terrible. I just feel like it. that they really took off the Rams uniform. And it almost looks like the Chargers logo. It looks like two bananas. “

This time around, it looks like Dickerson is okay with the change. He appeared in a team-produced video that showed running back Cam Akers checking out the new uniforms while surrounded by artifacts from the Rams’ past, including Dickerson’s iconic eyewear.

The Rams will wear the uniforms in three regular season games in 2021: their opener against the Chicago Bears, Week 9 against the Tennessee Titans, and Week 10 against the San Francisco 49ers.
