A tentative agreement between the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Los Angeles Teachers Union was reached Tuesday night to reopen schools from mid-April, according to multiple reports.
The deal would include daily in-person learning for elementary school students, but still relies heavily on online education for older students, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Middle and high school students learned in class two days a week, but at home on the other days. Students would stay in the same classroom all day rather than switch rooms between periods and learn remotely from various teachers sitting in the same classroom, according to the Times. Families would also be allowed to keep their child in distance learning.
“As we’ve both been saying for some time, the right way to reopen schools must include the highest level of COVID safety in schools, continued reduction of the virus in the communities we serve, and access to vaccinations for school personnel, “United Teachers Los Angeles President Cecily-Myart Cruz and LAUSD Superintendent Austin Beutner said in a joint statement. “This agreement achieves this set of common goals. It is our shared commitment to the highest safety standards and the spirit of trust and collaboration that we will bring back with us to schools.”

Elementary students would attend half a day each day, which helped reduce class sizes.
The month of April was decided because it would allow educators and other school workers to get vaccinated and achieve maximum immunity to shooting before returning to school, which can take up to six weeks. , according to the Times.
According to a schedule suggested by the school district, elementary students would be the first to return on April 19 and older students would follow in early May. An official date has not been set with the union.
Under the deal, the county would be forced to move to “red level” from the more serious “purple level”, which is expected within days of the drop in the number of cases.
Schools have been closed since March 13 of last year.
