The devastating trend of escalating death rates in Louisiana continued on Wednesday, pushing confirmed deaths over the past week to 361, according to a midday update from the Louisiana Department of Health.
The state has reported 85 new confirmed deaths and 25 others believed to have been caused by the coronavirus, for a total of 110 new deaths.
The weekly total of deaths in Wednesday’s report was a 15% increase from the previous week and an increase of 464% from the previous month, and the highest seven-day number since the first wave in spring 2020.

There were 1,215 deaths in total during the fourth wave in Louisiana, a rate that exceeds both the second and third waves.
Confirmed cases increased by 3,811. Another 2,808 were classified as “probable” cases, bringing the total of new cases to 6,619.
People continue to be admitted to hospital at exceptionally high levels due to the coronavirus, but the numbers have fallen slightly in recent days. There were 2,844 in the hospital, a decrease of 12 from the previous day.
One of Louisiana’s latest COVID victims was not even a year old.
The number of people on respirators fell by 8, to a total of 472.
