Louisiana will soon be one of the few southern states with a mask mandate still in effect | Coronavirus

Louisiana will soon be one of the only southern states to have a statewide mask mandate in response to the COVID pandemic. As of this week, all states bordering Louisiana will have relinquished their mandates.

Governor John Bel Edwards issued a statewide mask warrant in July 2020. The warrant came after local action was passed in the parishes of Orleans, Jefferson and East Baton Rouge.

In Louisiana, people are required to wear masks when entering establishments or outdoors if they cannot be at least six feet from others. If customers refuse to wear a mask and refuse to leave the business, they can be charged with trespassing.

Here’s a look at the state of mask warrants elsewhere in the South.

Mississippi

Mississippi relinquished its mandate on March 3, but some cities still have local mandates, according to The Clarion Ledger. The governor’s new order, which expires Wednesday, encourages the wearing of a mask in public but does not require it.

Gov. Greg Abbott’s decision to lift the mandate has been criticized by some leaders. Three of Abbott’s four coronavirus medical advisers said they were not directly consulted before lifting the warrant, according to the report.

Abbot, a Republican, has come under heavy criticism from his party over the mandate, which was imposed in July 2020, and other COVID-19 restrictions. It has never been applied lightly, even during the worst outbreaks of the pandemic.
