LSU Head Coach Ed Orgeron will have to continue his search for a new defensive coordinator.
NFL Network’s Jane Slater and other media reported on Monday, New Orleans Saints defensive line coach Ryan nielsen had told head coach Sean Payton that he was ready to take on the defensive coordinator position at Baton Rouge. Sources have confirmed the same with Geaux247 staff.
But then there was a catch, with Slater later reporting that the Saints were not currently signing Nielsen’s release as the franchise argued “whether the language of Nielsen’s contract would support the college move up.
On Tuesday morning, Orgeron was on ESPN 104.5 off the bench with T-Bob Hebert to share the latest news from the end of LSU.
“We’re still working on it,” Orgeron said. “He’s a prime candidate. I obviously love Ryan. He is a bright, young and energetic trainer and comes highly recommended to us. But there are still things to be worked out to see if he can still come to LSU, and those things are not final yet.
On Tuesday afternoon, Bruce Feldman reported that Nielsen would be staying with the Saints and not taking the post of defensive coordinator, with sources telling staff at Geaux247 that the Saints would not release Nielsen from his contract.
Nielsen was Orgeron’s last target to replace Bo Pelini, who spent a season as a defensive coordinator under Orgeron. Baylor Head Coach Dave aranda was previously LSU’s defensive coordinator ahead of Pelini’s 2020 season at Baton Rouge.
Nielsen, a Southern Cal graduate, played on the defensive line under Orgeron in the late 1990s and early 2000s. His first job in college coaching was as a graduate assistant under Orgeron at USC in 2002. , and he rose through the coaching ranks from there. In 2005, Orgeron appointed Nielsen as his defensive line coach at Ole Miss, and the two spent three seasons together at Oxford. From 2013 to 2016, Nielsen was the defensive line / recruiting / running game coordinator at North Carolina State, where his rise to glory took on new speed. After being in the mix for the Broyles Award, the Saints head coach Sean payton caught Nielsen as the team’s defensive line coach in 2017, and his results have been impressive in all four seasons with the team.
Now Payton & Co. have put an end to Orgeron’s attempt to lure the Saints’ talented assistant.
For the Tigers, there are still three hires to be made on the defensive side of football.
Orgeron must find a defensive coordinator, then hire the defensive line coach or linebackers, as well as a new safety coach.
