This feature could help reduce congestion at PDX, which has struggled to cope with the increased use of carpool connections at the airport. "Often it's cluttered along the sidewalk and it can be very difficult for riders to find their drivers," said Michael Huggins, PDX's senior director for field operations, in a statement.
Searching for your assigned car in front of a crowded arrival terminal while dozens of others are doing the same is a recipe for disaster. Many airports have either moved Uber and Lyft to designated departure areas or have banned them altogether. But lining up for an Uber or Lyft pretty much looks like queuing for a taxi from the airport, as some social media pointed out. Given the damage caused by carpools at most airports, a more efficient method of organizing cars and passengers may be necessary. At least with a designated line, runners do not have to worry about canceled trips or waiting for drivers to find them.
