Macomb County opens COVID vaccination for people 16 and older with health problems

MONT CLEMENS, Michigan. – Macomb County Manager Mark Hackel said the county is ready and not playing any games when it comes to handing out vaccines.

This is why they are expanding the list of people who can get the vaccine in Macomb County. Starting Saturday, anyone with a disability aged 16 or over can call and make an appointment.

“Basically what we did was decided that these people with disabilities and other family members or caregivers and even their caregivers sometimes have the option to go ahead and sign up for the vaccine,” Hackel said. “16 years or older. We are working with our school districts to identify people who might fall into these categories. “

Hackel said this is a huge achievement, but that they always target the elderly first.

“Our biggest concern was to make sure we took care of our seniors first and I’m telling you, there are over 100,000 seniors here in Macomb County,” Hackel said.

But how do you determine who is telling the truth about their terms and who is not?

“A lot of it is based on the honor system,” Hackel said. “I don’t know too many people who are going to take advantage of it and try to do it.”

Of course, Hackel expects more people to call. There will be more calls and more appointments.

“We’re ready and, again, I think we’ll be able to open up to almost everyone – anyone who wants the vaccine – sooner than probably the April 5 deadline,” Hackel said.
