A freezer outage in Washington prompted clinics at the University of Seattle and the University of Washington to vaccinate thousands of people overnight.
Swedish non-profit health system tweeted Thursday evening, 588 appointments for the Moderna coronavirus vaccine were available from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m.
All appointments were made shortly after the tweet was posted, Swedish said on twitter.
The 1,650 doses ended up being administered that night, Kevin Brooks, chief operating officer of the Swedish Medical Center, told NBC News.
Brooks was part of the team that ensured that vaccines did not go to waste.
The Swedish tweet called for Phase 1A and Phase 1B / Level 1 volunteers.
“We were able to support another healthcare organization and make sure that no dose is wasted,” Brooks said. “It was moving to see grannies in wheelchairs at 2 am getting vaccinated.”
The sudden announcement of additional vaccines has left some Seattle citizens wondering when it might be their turn to get their vaccine, but Brooks is confident their clinics will help them once they get enough doses.
“I reflect on how far we’ve come since treating Covid-19 patients in our intensive care units, and how now we’re all inspired to be able to administer the vaccine now,” Brooks said. “Ending this pandemic is within reach!”
