Maine reported 49 more cases of COVID-19 and 10 virus-related deaths on Thursday, as infections continue to rise in nearly every state.
The additional cases reported Thursday bring the total of cases in Maine to 69,373 since the start of the pandemic. There were 877 deaths.
The numbers are still far lower than what Maine saw during periods of peak infection in April and January last year, but indicate that the most contagious delta variant could be on the rise, especially in unvaccinated people.
As of Wednesday, 59.3% of Maine’s roughly 1.3 million people had received their last dose of the vaccine. This figure rises to 67.4% among the population aged 12 and over eligible for vaccination.
Information on the deceased and ongoing hospitalizations was not immediately available Thursday morning. On Wednesday, 29 people were hospitalized, including 17 in intensive care and five under ventilation.
Nationally, the United States has seen a more than 100% increase in the seven-day average of new cases reported daily compared to two weeks ago. As of Thursday, 38,236 new cases were reported, bringing the daily seven-day average of new cases to 26,513. Two weeks ago, the daily seven-day average was 12,540, according to data from the New York Times.
