DJs are not really known for their candid confessionals, but the new Diplo mini documentary bucks the trend. Offering a rare glimpse into the emotional consequences of the world tour and the non-stop party, the doco is a revealing look at how fame has left one of Florida's biggest hip-hop nerds in a lonely king at the top
Florida To California is basically a humblebrag of eight minutes. Directed by Kyle DePinna (better known as DJ Neo Fresco), the mini doco covers Diplo's career from top to bottom
Release on YouTube to celebrate Diplo's latest EP, California on documentary begins with Diplo Images recording his first album, 2004's Florida . Through narration, Diplo demonstrates how he has been exposed to a multitude of genres, from punk to Miami base and classic rock. This proved useful when he moved to California, working across genres and taking just about everything he could.
"I took advantage of all my opportunities, with all these guys – just to say?", He recounts. "And not really trying to make a big hit or a club record, but just do something cool that was not there before. "
But his current love is hip-hop, and Diplo takes the time to say that his latest rapper – the heavy HD could not exist in 2004, because the genre lacked the "open-mindedness" it has now.
For fans, the doco is a delightful retrospective over the last ten years, in the process of cut pictures with a lot of familiar faces, including MIA, Madonna, Post Malone, MØ, Justin Bieber. This is a reminder of the productivity of Diplo as a producer. While the album covers parade in front of us, we remember that he worked with virtually everyone.
It's about half the time that the documentary has bandonne by saying anything. Instead, it becomes a montage of cool crap and Instagram stories, appropriately set on his latest new single "Look Back".
And so we look back as Diplo's backflip of a yacht! Diplo hangs out with Madonna! Diplo puts agile spinning mills on his face! Diplo snowboards! Diplo makes 15 million US dollars in 2015 (28.5 million dollars last year)! Diplo is the first American act to play in Cuba!
Folks, it feels good to be a Diplo.
At least, one could never say that he lacks self-awareness. Last year he produced What Would Diplo Do? A mini-comedy series that saw James Van Der Beek play a slightly thickened version of the DJ.
