Emmys overvalued Netflix and undervalued CBS, ABC: Study

Netflix had a record year for Emmy nominations, with 112 streaming service nominations having broken a 17-year period of HBO becoming the most nominated network of the year.

But the ranking of Netflix's nominations to the Emmys does not reflect consumer demand in the television industry, according to a new study by Parrot Analytics.

In the study, the company estimated the average American "demand" for all shows from the 11 networks that received more than 15 Emmy nominations this year, and it compared the market share of each Consumer demand at its share of 2018 Emmy appointments. Parrot Analytics estimates the "demand" of viewers for broadcasts by analyzing ranking data (if any), social chatting, blogging, and illegal hacking, among other factors.

The study found that this year's Emmys are "potentially valuing Netflix issues," comparing Netflix's share of nominations to its popularity among consumers.

The study also showed that the Emmys "underestimate US public demand" for broadcast networks like FOX, ABC and CBS, in comparison with the relatively few nominations each received – but this is probably due to the TV Academy perceive a lower broadcast quality on broadcast networks, since the Emmy are based on artistic merit, not on popularity.


Parrott Analytics

HBO, which came in second with 108 Emmy nominations, was in fact the most successful network for this year's Emmys, according to the Parrot Analytics metric. The cable network accounted for 8.9% of US demand and 20.4% of Emmy appointments, a difference of + 11.5%.

At the same time, Netflix, which had 21.4% more HBO and more US 14.1%, had a 7.3% "outperformance". which means that it should have been even more nominations that HBO has given its popularity.
