Women Enter History and Receive Late Recognition at the 2018 Eisner Awards

Age of gold at the ascending age, the weekend Eisner Awards were largely a celebration of women's recognition of what is commonly referred to as the "Oscars of the Comic Book" .

Marjorie Liu, for example, became the first woman to receive the title of best writer, awarded to Alan Moore exactly thirty years ago. Liu is the co-creator, along with artist Sana Takeda, of the imaginative "Monstress" epic of Image Comics on young warriors who, according to Liu, "become monsters in their own right." "Monstress" won five Eisners, which followed series and best publication for teens.

Then there was Emil Ferris, a star in his fifties for his first graphic novel, "My Favorite Thing Is Monsters" (Fantagraphics). Ferris was an artistic warrior in her own right, recovering from the West Nile virus and struggling to regain the use of her hand to shoot. Ferris won three Eisners, including best writer-artist and best colorist.

There was Tillie Walden receiving the honor of working based on the best reality for her graphic memory "Spinning" (first second). Walden became one of the youngest Eisner winners at the age of 22.

And from the other end of the story of the cartoon rose Joye Murchison Kelly. At age 90, Kelly finally received recognition decades after her contributions to Wonder Woman became uncredited – for comics written by WWII creator William Moulton Marston.

Kelly, who was on hand Friday night at the ceremony by Comic-Con International of San Diego, received the Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic Bookwriting – an honor that was also awarded to Dorothy Roubicek Woolfolk, editor and editor-in-chief of Dorica Comics / All-American Publications. They are the first two women to receive the award in her 13 years of history.

Rumiko Takahashi, the legendary manga artist who was inducted into the Eisner Hall of Fame – a quarter of a century after She received the Inkpot Award from Comic-Con. Other members of the Hall of Fame included Karen Berger, the famous former editor of DC / Vertigo; Carol Kalish, pioneer in the direct comic book market; and the late Jackie Ormes ("Torchy Brown," "Patty-Jo" n 'Ginger "), the first African-American woman to create a syndicated journal comic.

Among the works of other color creators, the stories of Jillian Tamaki in "Boundless" (Drawn & Quarterly) won the best graphic album / honor reprint; the best limited series went to Marvel's "Black Panther: The World of Wakanda", by Roxane Gay, Ta-Nehisi Coates and Alitha E. Martinez; and the best anthology went to "Elements: Fire, A Comic Anthology" by Beyond Press by Taneka Stotts

Gay and Walden will be the speakers on September 1 at the Library of Congress. National Book Festival, as part of the graphic novels presentation hosted by the Washington Post's Comedy Riffs

"There was an energy in the room that grew with each victory for a woman, a person of color or a strange person . " Walden, who was present at the Indigo Ballroom of the event, told Comic Riffs. "It's time."

The tribute for the best adaptation of another medium went to Abrams ComicArts "Kindred", by the legendary science fiction late Octavia Butler, adapted by Damian Duffy and John Jennings. And the trophy for Best Academic / Scholarly Work went to "Latinx Superheroes in Mainstream Comics" from the University of Arizona Press, by Frederick Luis Aldama

As previously reported, New York-based philanthropist [19659014] Frederick Joseph was one of two recipients of the Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award, for his GoFundMe campaign, which was transformed into a national movement called "Black Panther Challenge," to help minority and disadvantaged children see the Marvel film of this year in cinemas.
