The chairman of Volvo and Geely has signed an agreement with a Chinese aerospace company to build "hypersonic" trains.
Li Shufu, boss of the car manufacturer, has struck a deal with the China Aerospace Industry and Science Corp (CASIC) to "pool their capabilities" to create a network of ultra-fast trains in China.
Mr Shufu's company said it would combine its technology with CASIC to pursue the project, which would have similarities to Elon Musk's Hyperloop.
The technologies include magnets permitting trains to be able to avoid friction and pass through a vacuum tube to remove air resistance.
The deal, signed at an aerospace conference in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai, did not say when the trains would be ready or how much they would cost.
CASIC claims to be developing at 1,000 kph (620 mph), with the ambition of having accelerated technology at speeds of 4,000 kph (2485mph).
CASIC, one of China's state-owned aerospace manufacturers, said at the time it was making "near-ground flight" with "flying trains".
