PETALING JAYA: The number of cases of hand disease, foot-and-mouth disease and foot-and-mouth disease in Malaysia increased by 28% as of June 30, said the Ministry of Health, Datuk, Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah. At the end of June this year, the number of cases was 27,296 compared to 21,303 for the same period in 2017.
"The number of cases in 12 states has exceeded alert levels, except in Johor , Sabah and Sarawak.The alert levels are the average number of MMPD cases in the last five years and the numbers are different depending on the number of cases in each state, "said Dr. Noor Hisham yesterday.
It says currently, there are 341 kindergartens centers or kindergartens that have reported HFMD clusters in their premises, accounting for 50% of the total outbreak reported for the year.
Surveillance of the HFMD virus has also shown an increase in the enterovirus 71 (EV71) in the environment since March
The HFMD, said Dr. Noor Hisham, is caused by an enterovirus with the majority of cases due to the Coxsackie A16 and EV71 virus.
The virus spreads when it comes in contact with saliva, blisters and stools of patients.
"Most infections are mild with symptoms of fever and blisters on the hand, foot, mouth and tongue.
" Almost all patients with HFMD recover without treatment within seven to 10 days . "However, EV71 infection can cause more complications such as encephalitis, pulmonary edema and myocarditis.
" There are no drugs or vaccines that can prevent HFMD infection, "said Dr. Noor Hisham.He said that HFMD is easily infectious, especially among children in daycares or kindergartens.
In Iskandar Puteri Dr. Sahruddin Jamal, Chairman of the State Committee for Health, Environment and Agriculture declared HMFD Case, with 1,812 cases from January to July 11 against 1,505 case for the year 2017.
"It is advisable for parents not to send their children under 12 years old in daycares, kindergartens and schools where they present HMFD Dr. Zainudin Mohd Ali, director of state health, said that 1,147 cases of HFMD have was reported in 1945.
