KUCHING: Malaysia has the highest rate of diabetes in Asia and one of the highest in the world, probably next to Saudi Arabia, said the executive chairman of the National Institute of Diabetes (Nadi) Dr. Mustafa Embong. He said that there are about 2.5 million diabetic adults in Malaysia, aged 18 and over.

"According to Nadi's records, statistics suggest that nearly half of Malaysians do not know that they have diabetes."

People with type 2 diabetes have no symptoms until they develop heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and amputations.

He was speaking to Bernama at the 10th Diabetes Complications Conference. and Grand Rounds (DCOM 2018) held here today.

Mustaffa said due to the lack of symptoms, diabetes was called a silent killer.
