Netflix expands its European footprint and has chosen Madrid as the site of its first production hub on the continent.

The entertainment giant said on Tuesday that the new operation will take place in Ciudad de la Tele, a new 72,000-square-foot campus in Tres Cantos, in northern Madrid.

The company will occupy three sound stages from September and will join the local group Grupo Secuoya, an audiovisual production services company that will be Netflix's partner.

Netflix stated that the new center will serve as a center for the growing production of original Spanish-language content in the coming years, including new and existing titles, as well as series and films made by production partners .

Spain has become an important market for Netflix, which is the home of such series as Paquita Salas Las Chicas del Cable and Casa de Papel (Money Heist ) the latter of which Netflix said that he was the most watched non-English show.

Netflix said that over 13,000 actors, team members and extras are working on 20 original Netflix productions across the country this year. The next Spanish releases include Season 3 of Las Chicas del Cable in September and a new feature by acclaimed director Isabel Coixet in production. "The establishment of our first European production center will create new opportunities for Spain's incredible creative talent, as well as our commitment to producing original content throughout Europe."

Netflix has expanded its productions into the local language Europe, launching original shows in Germany, France, Italy and other countries.

A Netflix spokesperson said the company is planting production centers in foreign territories where it has a critical mass of production and where there is a high density of talent. For example, Netflix has established hubs in Canada, in different parts of the country, depending on the needs of the productions.

Netflix, based in Los Gatos, California, has been investing more in the production space for a few years, increasing the production of original content. The company has a 10-year lease at Sunset Bronson Studios in Los Angeles, including an adjacent office tower that serves as the local headquarters.

Netflix recently reported that it has reached 130.1 million subscribers worldwide. The company has missed new subscriber additions for the second quarter, adding one million fewer subscribers than expected.
