THE OzAsia festival has theatregoers ready for performances from Asia. But for a real taste of Asia, head down to the Lucky Dumpling Market on the banks of the Torrens in front of the Convention Centre from tomorrow until November 11.

Indian, Vietnamese, Filipino and Japanese food will be available. The Filipino Project, Sookii La La (South-East Asian street food) and Teppanyaki Noodles will be back, with new additions Humpty Dumplings and Astonish Patisserie.

A new sake bar and bubble teas are additions to the drinks menu, which will be a hit in the longer warm evenings.

Lucky Dumpling Market event director Daniel Michael – who is also the owner of Adelaide Fringe Hub Gluttony – says: “It’s exciting to once again work in partnership
with the Adelaide Festival Centre and OzAsia Festival, which grows bigger and better each year.”

This year, the venue is cashless, which means you can only pay for meals and snacks with cards. Daniel said the cash-free policy was following the lead of the (Fringe) Croquet Club and the Adelaide Oval.

“If they can do it,” he says, “we can, too. People get used
to it. Nobody can get robbed – it’s simpler and easier for everyone.”

Daniel says, at last year’s Lucky Dumpling Festival, 75-80 per cent of purchases were made with cards. At the Fringe, 60 per cent used a card.

He says market organisers are looking into the possibility of festival goers being able to buy a cash card which they load up, then use to buy food.

Not that you have to buy anything at the market. There is no charge to wander through, and there are free performances from local and international bands and DJs, including India’s Grammy Award-winning Vikku Vinayakram and Kabir Cafe, Singapore’s Charlie Lim, Malaysia’s Nading Rhapsody, The Philippines’ Joey Ayala, and Taiwan’s Freedom Beat + DJ Cheer.

“You only need to buy something if you want to,” Daniel says.

“The market works well; it’s a tight, compact space which feels a bit like a mall or an Asian street food scenario.”

He says people are welcome to come down for a snack before or after a show.

The market will be open from 4.30pm every day until 9pm or 10pm on weeknights and midnight on weekends, weather permitting.
