The Father of the Year is the latest film under the Netflix contract with Adam Sandler's Happy Madison production company. This time, rather than Sandler himself in the role of the ironically-titled human-child, his old boyfriend David Spade Saturday Night Live 19459003 takes the lead role: a single, faint-minded single dad living in a New Hampshire trailer party whose son returns from college.
THE FATHER OF THE YEAR : TRAVELING OR JUMPING?
GIST: Ben (Joey Bragg) and Larry (Adam Shively) return from college to their hometown. Larry's father (Nat Faxon) is an emasculated beta terrorized by his young son-in-law, while Ben's father (Spade) lives in a trailer park and uses the neighbor's truck as his pool. That the movie gets to David Spade naked in his driveway after being dumped in a makeshift pool in the sixth minute says it all. One night, Ben and Larry engage in one of those idiot-boy conversations about which the father can beat the other. Spade no longer feels safe with his son major, who does not idolize him anymore, so when he gets wind of the debate, he is in complete agreement with this idea. It's less the father of Larry, who is the kind of exaggerated cowardly that we only get in the movies of a bunch of brown dudes who have never written a single female character. The fallout from this brawl attempt ends with humiliated adults, sons whose career is threatened, and a destroyed greenhouse.
Which films will it remind you of ?: David Spade works many of his Joe Dirt material in his return to white-trashdom. Otherwise, it is a warm Madison Happy warmed material, with an ocean of toxic masculinity that manifests itself in everything from coarse and masculine humor to coarse humor and old going through high-molybdenum scenes. Watch out: David Spade is a universe that has been removed from his best comic ratings at this stage, and the character of Faxon is so insulting that he can not save it. But the younger characters are incredibly likeable, considering all the circumstances. Bragg and Shively have great chemistry together, with Shively – some of whom might remember as the elder brother of The Real O Neals – as a particular promising talent. I'd like to see what he could do with a movie script worthy of him. And Bragg also has excellent chemistry with Bridget Mendler as a city girl who returns to Ben on her return.
Memorable Dialogue: Ben gently (ish?) Asks Meredith at the top ball, because she missed his. Aw. Except when they get there, comedian Fortune Feimster ( Champions ) works the door and finds Meredith a little too familiar:
"I've chased you from the prom there at age 4. You just kept shouting "Elders reign!" While you were in that bush, you messed up, stinking of the place. "
Meredith:" I think the most embarrassing part is I shouted, "The elders reign!" 19659008] 
Single Best Shot: This greenhouse exploded quite generously
Our Take: Adam Sandler definitely made some worse movies, so I'm not sure what he thought that # He turned his nose to this film. (What I have to imagine, is that New Hampshire's focus on the Spade character is a deadly gift.) But do not imagine for a moment that this movie was good. It's full of retrograde jokes and incredibly tired jokes and incredibly unfriendly adult characters. Neither Spade nor Faxon have the charm of saving their brutal characters, and Spade hardly seems to make an effort.
