WASHINGTON (WTHR) – A new Starbucks will open in Washington this fall and will be the company's first signature store in the United States
The Starbucks Signing Store, led by a team of 39; Deaf employees and allies, will have a design that promotes accessibility. It will also provide career development opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing people.
Starbucks will hire 20 to 25 employees, including people who are deaf and hard of hearing, to work at the store. They must be proficient in American Sign Language to qualify.
Baristas will even wear aprons made by a supplier who is deaf. Hearing employees will wear pins on their uniforms that say "I sign".
The first signature store opened in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2016.
Starbucks has demonstrated its commitment to serving people who are deaf and hard of hearing effectively.
