The summer movie season is home to some of the biggest blockbusters of the year. Each year, the public can expect movie theaters to be filled with movies of superheroes, animated adventures and other favorite shows from the franchise.
Many summer releases are among the most profitable movies of any year. We watched the biggest film of each summer since 2000, based on how much it did in the United States (according to Box Office Mojo figures), adjusted for inflation. We counted the movies that went out from May to August.
We also provided the film's original domestic gross, its global raw score, and its Rotten Tomatoes critical score for comparison. Some movies that have raked in big dollars have played terribly with critics.
Superheroes, animation films, and Disney ruled most summers in this period. Six of the movies below are animated, and eight are superhero movies. Others include entries in popular franchises like "Transformers" and "Harry Potter".
